Let’s Talk About Kink: Hanky Code Quiz Time

Once upon a time, kink folk used a rather colorful signal system to let others know what they were seeking and enjoyed. As time passed and culture changed, the hanky code has diminished in popularity. And since we’re cubs of a certain age, why not test our memories and see if we can recall what the various colors/patterns are when our quiz game host Cubziz put us to the test.

COL708: Jeff’s BDay Happy Hour: 7-11 Edition

In this episode of Cubs Out Loud, it’s Jeff’s Birthday (well it will be any day now). And there’s no better way to celebrate than by hanging out with our Entourage. With Cisco and Charles online (and some chatty bears in the comments), the guys correlate this 11th birthday show with a popular convenience store chain. And, for your convenience, one of bears’ favorite topics is discussed: FOOD!

Show Topics

That’s right, it’s Jeff’s birthday and this year we’re taking a pit stop at the local convenience store for some snacks and drinks. But there might be some debates about the items we can enjoy. But first, let’s discuss a little history about the well known international business.

Currently headquartered in Irving, Texas – it’s owned by Japanese Seven & I Holdings through Seven-Eleven Japan Co., Ltd. Founded in 1927 as an ice house storefront in Dallas. These Texas roots run deep and their 100th anniversary isn’t far off. For nearly the first 20 years they were known as Tote’m Stores because customers ‘toted’ away their purchases. The ‘7toEleven’ name change in the 1940s was used to reflect their new extended hours of 7am to 11pm all week long. And the current logo version includes the change in 1968 to utilize a lowercase ‘n’ at the end of the word ELEVEn.

7-Eleven operates, franchises, and licenses over 78K stores in 19 countries and territories as of Nov ‘21. Did you know they have multiple names? Nationally they operate as not only 7-Eleven but also Speedway mostly in the Midwest & East Coast, and as Stripes in the South Central US. – Wikipedia posting

With that said, let’s get into some questions to consider as part of Jeff’s birthday celebration.

Landscape of Relationships: Parasocial Interactions

Parasocial relationships are one-sided relationships where one person invests lots of time, energy, interest, and sometimes money where the other person is completely unaware of the other person’s existence.  Parasocial relationships are most common with celebrities, organizations, television stars, and social media.  These relationships are created through parasocial interactions (PSI) through mediated encounters with performers through mass media.

Social media offers an added layer of interaction for these relationships to intensify through likes, comments, and direct messaging.

Alief – def. knowing something isn’t real but feeling like it is

Positive Outcomes of Parasocial Relationships

*Identity Formation

  • performers can offer autonomy in relationships where they can receive total acceptance outside of parents/family.
  • provide a secure relationship without the fear of rejection.
  • feeling a part of a group
  • empathy

*Learning

  • Bandura’s Social Learning Theory says that social behavior is learning and imitating the behaviors of others.
  • Shows like Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, Blue’s Clues, and more recently Bluey all offer kids opportunities to learn through identification with these characters.

Negative Outcomes of Parasocial Relationships

*Body Image

  • research has indicated a negative relationship between parasocial relationships and body image, as well as self-comparison, social comparison with characters increases negative body image
  • interestingly among men, having a PSR with a superhero is likely to protect body image, where not having a PSR with a superhero is likely to hurt body image
  • the usage of filters in social media (like airbrushing in print media) has greatly increased, giving a false reality of performers.

*Aggression

  • more aggressive viewers were more likely to identify with aggressive characters and create PSR with them.

*General

  • anxiety media views are more likely to be more invested in parasocial relationships
  • parasocial relationships are one-sided and different traditional friendships
  • the whole hegemonic masculinity thing
  • parasocial breakups and grief “what happens when they ‘betray’ you or they die?” Research indicated this follows the patterns of a relationship breakup
  • can create bias in reality

Topics of PSR

  • Taylor Swift “Swifties”, Lizzo “Lizzbeans”
  • Twitter/Only Fans
  • Reality TV Stars
  • Vloggers/Podcast hosts
  • Fictional Characters
  • Tiktok
  • Politicians

Be mindful of the media you are consuming and how that translates into your other relationships and the real world.

Let’s Talk About Kink: Drummer Magazine Returns

Once upon a time, bears, cubs, admirers and more around the world enjoyed turning the pages of hard copy print magazines until the pages stuck together. Then the internet appeared on the scene, shifting focus for where we got our smut. 2007 sees the landscape change with turning a mobile phone into this thing called a smartphone. Soon after paper pages are replaced by swiping and sexting. Over a decade after the iPhone’s debut, the once very much enjoyed Drummer Men adult magazine is coming back on the scene. Is there an audience for a ‘zine’ – be it online with a print option?
