COL708: Jeff’s BDay Happy Hour: 7-11 Edition

In this episode of Cubs Out Loud, it’s Jeff’s Birthday (well it will be any day now). And there’s no better way to celebrate than by hanging out with our Entourage. With Cisco and Charles online (and some chatty bears in the comments), the guys correlate this 11th birthday show with a popular convenience store chain. And, for your convenience, one of bears’ favorite topics is discussed: FOOD!

That’s right, it’s Jeff’s birthday and this year we’re taking a pit stop at the local convenience store for some snacks and drinks. But there might be some debates about the items we can enjoy. But first, let’s discuss a little history about the well known international business.

Currently headquartered in Irving, Texas – it’s owned by Japanese Seven & I Holdings through Seven-Eleven Japan Co., Ltd. Founded in 1927 as an ice house storefront in Dallas. These Texas roots run deep and their 100th anniversary isn’t far off. For nearly the first 20 years they were known as Tote’m Stores because customers ‘toted’ away their purchases. The ‘7toEleven’ name change in the 1940s was used to reflect their new extended hours of 7am to 11pm all week long. And the current logo version includes the change in 1968 to utilize a lowercase ‘n’ at the end of the word ELEVEn.

7-Eleven operates, franchises, and licenses over 78K stores in 19 countries and territories as of Nov ‘21. Did you know they have multiple names? Nationally they operate as not only 7-Eleven but also Speedway mostly in the Midwest & East Coast, and as Stripes in the South Central US. – Wikipedia posting

With that said, let’s get into some questions to consider as part of Jeff’s birthday celebration.

Or there’s the Glazed Cheesy BBQ Meatballs?

Landscape of Relationships: Friends With Benefits

Is a friendship a relationship????

  • Thoughts?
  • Many cultures define friendships as a very important relationship
    • LGBTQ community- “chosen family”
  • Atlantic 2020 article that discussed the cultural and historical importances of friendships

The relationship escalator

A set of societal expectations for intimate relationships.  Partners follow a set of progressive set of steps, each with clear markers, with a goal in mind.

  • Making contact / Flirting
  • Initiation
  • Claiming and defining
  • Establishment
  • Commitment
  • Merging
  • Conclusion
  • Legacy

What does the science say about FWB relationships?

  • In 2017, 171 University of Denver students (more women than men) were surveyed on sexual satisfaction, commitment and trust of FWB relationships
  • Big takeaways? *drumroll please* communication and setting healthy boundaries
  • They found sexual satisfaction was important but so was sacrificing for the good of the partner, and not looking for the next best thing.
  • Why?  Lots of research is looking at young adults who are in school.  Romantic relationships are oftentimes an added stressor that takes away from studying.  Some students opt for FWB arrangements to reduce overall stress.

How to make a “friendship with benefits” work.

  • FWBs are supposed to decrease pressure, not add pressure.
  • You need to be friends in order to call it a FWB.  Those take time, trust, shared history, etc.
  • Must be mutually beneficial and convenient
  • If the FWB ends, you are allowed to be upset.
  • It’s confusing to try to develop friendship founded on a sexual relationship guided by a rule system that has to be invented as you go. Or, when you’re trying to force a friendship so that you can add sex as a benefit, where does the friendship part fit in? That’s putting the benefits before the friendship.”
  • “Sexual exploration can and often does become a part of an existing friendship between consenting people. Or you may have been in a romantic and/or sexual relationship with this person earlier in your life, but now it’s morphed into a friendship. In such circumstances, the sexual connection may remain, or may be reintroduced. But the common thread is the history between you, the investment you share in the friendship, and the trust that has formed. You recognize that you both enjoy the chemistry, but that you may not be as compatible emotionally as you are sexually. It’s a mutually understood experience. The connection you have as friends determines whether this time in your life and in your relationship is right to be sharing benefits.”

Tips for Having a FWB relationship that isn’t a mess

  • Make sure you can handle the emotional complexities
  • Define “friend” and “benefit” and make sure the other person is on the same page
  • Don’t start an FWB with someone who wants something more
  • Transparency with each other’s sexual history
  • FWB’s and Fuck Buddies are two different things
  • FWB relationships are about respect and boundaries
  • Prioritize the friendship over the benefits

COL471: Where is the body?

In this episode of Cubs Out Loud, the guys talk about the concept of body positivity. With recent developments such as the Arrested Movement photography series and the topic of male body image issues, being body positive is definitely up for current discussion and debate. But, what is it and what does it look like? Listen in as the cubs give their thoughts and feelings on this somewhat new notion. Are you body beautiful?

  • Re: COL470: The Porn Factor – Chris Green: Really enjoyed this one! I grew up in the same era, having the internet (dialup, newsgroups, bbs sites) around high school. No one mentioned another of the old-school methods of discovering porn; squinting at the blurred images on scrambled, adult TV channels!

YouTube Comment:

  • Re: COL470: The Porn Factor: Woofy – remember back in boarding school, boys would put pictures of naked women on their walls and it was super cool.  I did it with big hairy men and suddenly no one visited my room. What is this injustice.
