“The Times of Harvey Milk”: A Must Watch!

I just posted the following review of “The Times of Harvey Milk” at Netflix.

In this day and age where “gay rights” are considered a largely forgone conclusion by the gay population itself we have got to return to the past to understand why the fight is far from over. This documentary filmed over 25 years ago shows the fight is little changed while providing a wonderful glimpse into the life of Harvey Milk.

While the movie Milk shed light on the struggle Harvey encountered while coming to public office and leading the fight for gay rights and against discrimination The Times of Harvey Milk gives the viewer a much more hands on account of how tough the times were and how those times haven’t changed.

The documentary was filmed less than a decade after the assassination of Milk giving it an edge that is lost in the natural progression of three decades. The interviews with people touched by Harvey are numerous, enlightening and sometimes touching. The archival news footage brings the viewer right into the heart of the first fight for protection of human rights for homosexual persons. Despite Sean Penn’s excellent portrayal of Harvey Milk one can only understand Milk’s true appeal by watching him speak as shown by numerous appearances in this film.

The high point for me was the sight of half a dozen police cars set ablaze in the Castro and captured by news cameras. It shows the power that a community can have when they are provoked. That is but one scene that makes this a truly an A+ documentary that every gay individual should watch.

The sad part is that those fighting against so called “gay marriage” still use the same “family values” argument that Milk fought against during his tragically short term as Supervisor.

It’s time the gay community as a whole, leave the cliques formed over the past few decades behind and instead come together to fight for a united cause.

Watching The Times of Harvey Milk is the first step every gay man and woman can take to renew a sense of unity that we must have to continue Milk’s fight.

  1. Times have not changed much.

This documentary displays how small minded people think.
I mean, even up into this year , The Right took away the Rights from people who wanted to get married.

Rest In Peace Harvey, The world needs more of you.
